Black Diamond Distance FLZ Walking Poles Review

Does the Black Diamond Distance FLZ walking pole justify the cost? I put them to the test in the Highlands.

You may be forgiven for believing walking poles aren’t an essential item on the packing list for a hike. However, they are an instrumental piece of kit that will leave you wishing you had purchased them sooner.

Walking poles take up to 30% of the weight off your knees, particularly useful when carrying extra weight on the back. They improve stability, reduce the risk of slipping on wet surfaces, and can help endurance – allowing you to march further with less fatigue.

Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced long-distance hiker, walking poles continue to grow in popularity. And for very good reason. I tried and tested the Black Diamond Distance FLZ poles on a dry but gloomy day by hiking in the Shropshire Hills and here’s my verdict.

The Black Diamond Distance FLZ Walking Pole Design – Z-Pole vs Telescopic

There are two types of designs for walking poles. The telescopic version, the most common, and the Z-pole. Telescopic versions shorten in length like a telescope while the Z-pole design uses an innovative folding mechanism. Held together by straps, it folds into sections meaning it is more compact.

Although slightly more expensive, they are extremely transportable and can even fit into hand luggage if planning to take them abroad. The poles can fold to a minimum of just 34cm and a maximum of 41cm.

Durable and sturdy – Aluminium frames

Pole frames are usually made from aluminium or carbon fibre. Aluminium frames are slightly heavier but more sturdy, so there is less chance of them bending. If you’re looking to invest in poles for trail running, carbon fibre may be your best bet; however, for hiking, aluminium will be ideal.

Quick adjustment – Flick-lock mechanism

The Flick-lock, as opposed to the twist-lock mechanism, is the superior design for ensuring poles don’t collapse under excess weight. It’s a low-profile design for maximum clamping force. However, you will need a screwdriver to adjust the tension with these.

Cost

The Black Diamond Distance FLZ will set you back around £139. Budget aluminium poles start around £50 in comparison which means it’s on the expensive side. However, they will last you for years if looked after properly.
